1.5-millionth car to roll off Smart's France plant

Smart squeezed out its 1.5-millionth ForTwo from its Hamblach, France plant earlier this week. The car, a white ForTwo Electric Drive, which was put out prior to a pause in production for nearly two months as the factory undergoes extensive improvements.

Said to commence sometime later this month and lasting throughout August, these updates will cost Smart nearly $261-milion. Upgrades include an all-new paint shop embracing a liquid painting process said to be more environmentally friendly than the current powder-coating technique. Currently, the plant employs almost 1,500 workers.
